FPCC Business Summary
Formosa Petrochemical Corporation (FPCC) operates an integrated energy and petrochemical business model, generating revenue primarily through the refining of crude oil, the production of basic petrochemical feedstocks, and the sale of public utility services. The company’s operations are divided into two core segments: the Petrochemical segment, which produces refined petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, jet fuel) and olefins (ethylene, propylene, butadiene), and the Public Utility segment, which provides electricity and steam to the Mailiao Industrial Park. As Taiwan’s sole private refiner and its second-largest overall, FPCC leverages a massive 540,000 barrels-per-day refining capacity and three naphtha crackers to maintain a dominant regional position. Its primary direct competitors include the state-owned CPC Corporation (Taiwan), Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical, and PetroChina; FPCC distinguishes itself through superior vertical integration within the Formosa Plastics Group and a strategic pivot toward specialty chemicals and low-carbon fuels like sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). FPCC was founded in 1992 by brothers Wang Yung-ching and Wang Yung-tsai, the visionary pioneers of the Formosa Plastics Group (FPG). The current leadership team is headed by Chairman Mihn Tsao, who assumed the role in June 2024, and President Keh-Yen Lin, a company veteran with over 19 years of internal experience who was appointed to the top executive post in late 2024. Other key management figures include CFO Chien-Tang Tsai and Executive Vice President Te-Hsiung Hsu. The company’s governance is characterized by a concentrated ownership structure, with the "three sister companies" of the Formosa Plastics Group—Formosa Plastics Corp., Nan Ya Plastics, and Formosa Chemicals & Fibre—collectively holding a controlling interest of approximately 75%. This stable institutional backing enables long-term capital-intensive investments in energy transition and regional expansion across Southeast Asia and the United States.
